Cleanroom Pass Box Placement: Material Flow, Access, and Room Coordination

Use a cleanroom pass box placement review to map material routes, protect working zones and coordinate wall-opening decisions.

A cleanroom pass box location should follow the material route, rather than be chosen as an empty spot on a room drawing. Start by identifying where material comes from, where it waits, how it crosses the wall and where it goes next. Then review whether people can use both sides without blocking doors, benches or other work.

This is a planning review, not a universal installation rule. The facility team remains responsible for its workflow and room decisions. The proposed model and current project documents should confirm any configuration-specific detail.

1. Draw the complete transfer route

Mark the sending area, any staging point, the pass box, the receiving-side staging point and the next operation. Include returns, rejected material, waste or cleaning-related movement only where they use the same route.

The drawing should make four things visible:

  • The direction of normal material movement.
  • The item and handling method: hand-carried container, tray, cart or another aid.
  • The place where material may wait on each side.
  • The team or role that releases the transfer.

This simple route often exposes poor locations early. A pass box can look central on a plan but still add turns, crossings or temporary storage in a busy working area.

2. Treat both openings as working zones

Each side of the wall needs enough space for the person placing or removing material, checking the container and continuing along the intended route. Show nearby doors, corners, fixed benches, racks, carts, sinks and transfer points on the plan.

Ask practical questions at each opening:

  • Can the user approach, load or unload without interrupting another task?
  • Does a cart or tray approach fit the actual route?
  • Is there a sensible place to stage material before and after transfer?
  • Could a door swing, bench or stored item block routine use?

Avoid inserting a generic clearance number. Record the actual local constraint, then have the responsible facility reviewer confirm the usable working zone.

3. Keep material movement separate from people movement

Pass box placement affects people as much as products. Overlay normal walking paths, door swings, cart approaches and any nearby gowning or change activity that matters to the project. Look for points where a transfer would make a user turn around, step around equipment, hold a door open or cross an unrelated route.

The aim is not to claim that one layout is correct for every cleanroom. It is to make route conflicts visible before the wall opening is agreed. Where the placement could affect local cleaning practice or activity separation, the facility or contamination-control owner should review it.

4. Coordinate the wall opening with the route

Once the route works on both sides, check whether the wall or partition can support that location. Record the available opening information, wall type, nearby structure, surrounding finish and any local condition that may affect the opening.

Do not treat a product image or a generic drawing as installation evidence. Use current, model-specific information for the proposed configuration, and ask the facility or construction team to confirm the wall-opening assumptions before the location is fixed.

5. Make one decision-ready placement sheet

Before asking for final placement confirmation, prepare a single marked plan that includes:

  1. The proposed pass box location and both room-side routes.
  2. Sending, staging, transfer, receiving and return points.
  3. Doors, people routes, carts and nearby fixed equipment.
  4. The wall or partition detail available for review.
  5. Local constraints and the named reviewer for unresolved items.
